Upland game bird hunting
at The Bison Ranch at Coteau Ridge

The past few winters have been a blessing for our upland game populations. The Bison Ranch's unique proximity to both virgin pastures, row crops and CRP make it the ultimate in diversity of species: Sharp-Tailed Grouse, Hungarian Partridge, Mourning Dove, Sandhill Crane, Snipe, Woodcock, Tree Squirrel, Ring-Necked Pheasant are all thriving at The Bison Ranch.

Ron Schara of ESPN Backroads came to The Bison Ranch to hunt sandhill cranes. He was so impressed, he came back weeks later to hunt blue bills!

RINGNECK PHEASANT

Nothing is more beautiful than the sight of a ringneck pheasant scurrying to the dense cover of a field of CRP, corn or beans. Ringnecks may also be found in cattail sloughs or the brush and thickets of the virgin pastures at The Bison Ranch. Bring your No. 4, 5 or 6 shot.

Season: Oct. 13- Jan. 1
Limits: 3 daily 12 in possession

SHARPTAIL GROUSE
Though rare in many areas of the world, sharptail grouse proliferate in this area of North Dakota. They are everywhere in our fields and ditches on The Bison Ranch; the population has never been greater. They are what fed the settlers of last century, as they are sizeable and offer a great meat. Best hunted in morning or late afternoon, they are easiest to hunt until mid-October (although season is open until January 1). Bring No. 4 or 5 shot, and be prepared for a great hunt!

Season: September 8 - January 1, 2007
Limits: 3 daily 12 in possession

HUNGARIAN PARTRIDGE
These friendly and fast birds have always been part of the landscape at The Bison Ranch. They are somewhat quail-like, and can be seen in coveys in the thickets and brush, or scurrying through the grass. Bring a No. 5 or 6, and enjoy!

Season: September 9 - January 1, 2006
Limits: 3 daily 12 in possession

SANDHILL CRANE

Ron Schara came to The Bison Ranch to hunt sandhill cranes and had a great time of it. They are a big bird that yields a lot of great eating but do present a challenge because they can see you long before you see them! Bring BB and be prepared for a challenge!

Season: September 15 - Nov.14
Limits: 3 daily 6 in possession
